The UCF Strategic Investment Program invests in core academic activities to support President Alexander N. Cartwright’s vision that UCF will become a “University for the Future” as a top public institution and the world’s leading public metropolitan research university. The investments align with areas of strategic emphasis identified by UCF’s strategic plan as approved by its Board of Trustees.
Through the Artificial Intelligence Initiative, close to thirty new AI faculty will be hired, who will be tenured in 5 different colleges: College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Medicine, College of Sciences, College of Optics and Photonics and College of Business. To apply for one of these positions, please click here.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world and everyday lives — from facial recognition on phones to smart home devices to security measures implemented for online banking. By some estimates, the global artificial intelligence market will grow sixteen fold from 2020 to 2028, reaching nearly $1 trillion.
UCF seeks to be a leading AI research and workforce provider in offering a top-quality education in this field for undergraduate and graduate students. An interdisciplinary team led by Mubarak Shah, professor of Computer Science, will pursue groundbreaking technologies to benefit society and strengthen AI research, security and commercialization in Orlando, state of Florida and the nation.
The team includes experts from Engineering, Medicine, Business, Optics and Sciences. It will leverage strengths in AI and computer vision to expand into other core areas, such as robotics, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine learning, and applications. Among the goals are to conduct research to advance future AI industries and to bring together a diverse range of practitioners who will help prepare Florida for the momentous societal challenges and opportunities associated with AI.

Using ML to Power Live-stream Recommendations at a Global Scale
Dr. Omar Javed, Twitch (an Amazon company)
Friday, October 14, 2022, 3pm-4pm, HEC 101
Twitch is a premier live social video platform with millions of unique streamers and tens of millions of daily viewers. In 2021, 1.3 trillion minutes of content was viewed on Twitch. Recommendations are a key feature: they allow viewers to discover and connect with streamers as well as find communities. In this talk, I will discuss the challenges of recommending live video content, and compare these to traditional Video on Demand recommendations. I will then present neural network based algorithms for generating live stream recommendations, highlighting how these algorithms solve the challenges associated with live content. I’ll go over the methods, offline experimentation, and evaluation metrics for live-streaming scenarios. Finally, I’ll talk about the solution’s success in a sitewide A/B test that significantly increased viewership.
I intend to kick-off the conversation with a discussion of my journey into ML based product development, and talk about key considerations for applied-ML research that powers products operating at a global scale.

UCF WEALTH Symposium at Lake Nona
Wellness, Education, AI, and Lifestyle Technology in Health
Friday, October 14, 2022, 9am-6pm
leAD Sports & Health Tech Accelerator, Lake Nona
Please join us for the first annual UCF WEALTH symposium to showcase Wellness, Education, AI, and Lifestyle Technology in Health (WEALTH) innovations being developed in our budding Lake Nona Medical City. Our UCF College of Medicine serves as a hub for community medicine across several hospitals, clinics and wellness centers in the Central Florida area, and our faculty serve on the new UCF-wide Artificial Intelligence Initiative to develop new applications and programs in data science with these partners. UCF WEALTH at Lake Nona provides students, faculty, entrepreneurs and others vested stakeholders a local avenue to develop their technology innovations in health and wellness and showcase them on a global stage.
This inaugural event will be sponsored by Google Cloud, and it will be held at the leAD Sports & Health Tech Accelerator that supports early stage sports performance and wellness startups in the heart of Lake Nona. If you are an engineer working on healthcare problems, or if you are in healthcare working on technology solutions, please join us at UCF WEALTH to share your work and help develop a unique culture of innovation in Lake Nona.
