April 2017: Co-Pi and Graduate Students visited each teacher's classroom.

April 2017: Co-Pi and Graduate Students visited each teacher's classroom.

May 2017: Teachers exposed to research topics in their subject areas and selections were made for their Focused Research Activity.

May 13, 2017: Required orientation session from 9:00 am-11:15 am. Teachers were meet by the Program Evaluation and Educational Research Group (PEER) group at orientation and were asked to complete a pre-experience questionnaire. This was followed by a briefing on RET program requirements and then by a social lunch with the co-PI.

May 20, 2017: RET dissemination workshop. The agenda for the event was the following. Registration took place from 8 to 9 am followed by a welcoming speech. At 9:15 am the invited distinguished speaker Dr. Malcom Butler gave a talk. This was followed by the first section of spotlight presentations from the 2016 RET cohort at 9:45 am. Starting at 11:10 am, a student panel discussion was conducted. This student panel was comprised of students selected from among teachers of the 2016 RET cohort by the teacher. The goal of this panel was to discuss feedback from the student point of view on the 2016 RET program. A social lunch took place from 12 to 1pm. From 1 to 3 pm, the second and third sections of spotlight presentations by the 2016 RET cohort took place with a ten minute break at 2pm. Lastly, presentations by the CRCV faculty on their research areas were given from 3 to 3:30 pm followed by closing ceremonies and a survey.

May 27, June 3, June 10, 2017: Introductory session [flexible dates]. A 6-8 hour session where teachers obtained detailed plans for the year and training with their laptops on learning the basics of two programming languages (Python and MATLAB) for helping with their projects.

Early June to Early August: Focused research activity. Each teacher participated in 30 sessions upon a personalized scheduling arrangement. Each session was a day long, and teachers were guided by a professor or PhD student. During this period, two additional social events took place. A social lunch with Dr. Mubarak Shah at Giovanni's Italian Restaurant on July 5, 2017, and dinner at Dr. Shah's house on July 16, 2017. Additionally during this period, the PEER group conducted a midsummer experience questionnaire during the teachers' fourth week of summer.

June 16, 2017: REU presentation session. Three of the RET 2017 cohort teachers attended the REU student presentation sessions taking place.

June 29, 2017: Teachers attended the PhD proposal presentation for Gonzalo Vaca, chaired by Dr. Mubarak Shah.

July 7, 2017: Teachers attened the PhD thesis defense for Waqas Sultani, chaired by Dr. Niels D. Lobo.

July 17, 2017: RET spotlight presentations and poster session. The events for this day were as follows. Grab-and-go breakfast was provided starting at 8 am. Introductory talks were given by Dr. Mubarak Shah, President John Hitt, CECS Dean Michael Georgiopoulos, Undergraduate Dean Elizabeth Dooley, Director of Undergraduate Research Dr. Kimberly Schneider, and Deputy Asst. Director of the NSF for CISE Erwin Gianchandani, starting at 9 am. Then, after alumni introductions, a coffee break, and a brief talk by Dr. Shah, the keynote speaker Shree Naya from Columbia University spoke starting at 11:15 am. After another short break, lunch was served at 12:30 pm and a second speaker, Maha Sallam (REU 1989), spoke starting at 1:30 pm, followed by the 2017 RET teacher spotlight presentations and poster session. After this session, starting at 3:45 pm, talks by Adam Hoover (REU 1991), then Dr. Niels da Vitoria Lobo, followed by Ankur Datta (REU 2001), and finally Dr. Ulas Bagci, Dr. Ali Borgi, and Dr. Boqing Gong were given. A panel session followed at 5:05 pm leading into a banquet dinner at 6:30 pm and the second keynote talk of the day by Dr. Moshe Vardi from Rice University.

July 25-28, 2017: TeachEngineering.org information session. Teachers met with the RET leadership team for one session during these flexible dates to discuss the requirements for submitting their lesson plans to TeachEngineering.org.

Prior to July 31, 2017: Post-experience questionnaires and individual interviews. RET teachers completed a post-experience questionnaire and individual interviews to gain perspectives about the effectiveness of the program as well as recommendations for change.

October 21, 2017: Graduate student talk series in coordination with Jordan Orlewicz for AP and honors physics students: "What is computer vision and artificial intelligence?". These talks took place from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. The first talk consisted of a 45 minute introduction to the basics of computer vision and a showcase of current real world applications of computer vision and artificial intelligence. This was followed by three graduate students giving talks about their Ph.D. research projects either recently published or submitted for publication. Each of these talks was followed by question and answer sessions.

Classroom implementations of the summer research takes place during the 2017-2018 school year for each teacher.
